For the attention of Ivan Jancarek
Ambassador of Czech Republic in Denmark
Dear Ambassador Ivan Jancarek
We are writing to you on behalf of Europe for Peace, to express our deep concern
and disapproval of the U.S. project to install a radar base in your country, as
part of the so called National Missile Defence System, despite the fact that,
according to the latest polls, 68% of Czechs oppose this plan and the
government’s negotiations with the US regarding it.
The installation of a missile defence system in Eastern Europe is, virtually, a
declaration of war and has already contributed to raise international tensions
and the arms race, with the growing risk of a new conflict, possibly a nuclear
one. Besides, your government is not listening to the opinion of the majority
of the people and is denying the request for a referendum to decide on this
important issue.
We express solidarity and support to the national demonstration on November 17,
2007 at 4pm in Prague’s Wenceslas Square, organized by the “No to the Bases”
initiative together with humanist organisations, trade unions, students, the
league of mayors and other groups.
We know that on this date you celebrate the “Struggle for Freedom Day” that led
to the fall of a totalitarian regime and we find it very meaningful that in the
same day thousands of Czech citizens must still demonstrate to request freedom
and a real democracy, in which they can decide about their future and make the
government hear their voice.
Regards
Juha Uski, representative of Europe For Peace in Finland
