MEPs meet activists in Strasbourg and issue a declaration about the missile shield project

On July 9th a hearing about the U.S. space shield took place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, with interventions of Giorgio Schultze, spokesperson of the campaign “Europe for peace”, Jan Tamas, spokesperson of the campaign against the Space Shield and leader of the protest in Czech Republic and several MEPs.

Here is the declaration read and signed during the meeting. During the next days more signatories will be added and the declaration itself will be brought to the international conference of July 17th in Prague by Luisa Morgantini, Vice-President of the European Parliament.

MEPs Declaration about the U.S. space shield

Nowadays we are facing new challenges mining the development of European integration. Among these, the USA project of installation of the new missile and radar system, respectively in Poland and in the Czech Republic, is by now at an advanced stage.

It’s a new tailspin of the arms race which, among others negative effects, stresses the tension between Russia and Europe.

Public opinions in Poland and in the Czech Republic are admittedly against this project. Actually, in the Czech Republic there is a large movement of protest asking for a referendum on this issue.

It can no longer be denied that the USA are putting pressure on two members of the European Union to solve their own problems, ignoring or moving around the European Union itself, weakening its few prerogatives on common foreign policy, and dividing it.

We think that European security is an issue to be discussed by all 27 Members States and not only by two of them with the USA.

We would like to join voices of popular protests to ask the Governments of Prague and Warsaw to review their own positions, suspending any decision waiting for a common European discussion.

Pronunciamiento sobre el referéndum revocatorio del 10 de agosto

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Czech Foreign Affairs Minister, Karel Schwarzenberg signed the hugely unpopular Star Wars radar deal this morning despite opposition of 70% of the Czech population and thousands of Europeans.

In Wenceslas square this afternoon 5.000 expressed their outrage at the high-handedness of the anomalous right-wing government coalition, which brings together Christian Democrats and Greens. In the words of Jan Tamas, “the battle is just beginning! We do not want any American bases, Russian bases or Chinese bases. We do not want foreign armies occupying our territory. They have stepped on two thirds of this country’s population, they have disregarded the pleas of artists, sociologists, academics, doctors and those who have fought for freedom in this country but they will not stop us.”

The Czech government decided to ignore the calls to wait for the new US administration and to consult with the other 26 EU member States before committing itself to hosting a US military base, part of the American Missile Defence system, creating international tensions and targeting the heart of Europe. The agreement must now be ratified by the Czech Parliament and then signed by the President before becoming effective. The Parliament is divided in two but Jan Tamas voiced preoccupations that the US will buy those opposing the deal, tipping the scales in their favor.

The issue will be discussed tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the EU Parliament in Strasburg at the “Why a USA Missile Shield in Europe” hearing where Jan Tamas will be accompanied by Europe for Peace spokesperson Giorgio Schultze. The following week, on July 17 at 11:00 a.m., there will be an anti-Star Wars conference in the Czech Parliament in Prague attended by European Parliament Vice President, Luisa Morgantini.

Yhdysvallat valehtelee edelleen, että tämä kilpihomma olisi pelkästään “roistovaltioita” vastaan. Tai kyllähän se on niinkin, mutta Yhdysvaltojen määritelmä “roistovaltioista” on “kaikki paitsi me”. (”Jos et ole meidän puolellamme,…”) Ja erityisesti Venäjä, jolla on eniten ydinaseita Yhdysvaltojen ulkopuolella. Aikamoista provokaatiota ja Venäjän tyrkkimistä on ollut puheet, että jos ei kilpeä saada rakennetuksi Tsekkiin ja Puolaan, niin sitten Liettuaan esimerkiksi. Ja nyt kertovat näistä visiiteistä Bulgariaan ja Georgiaan samalla matkalla. Tarkoituksena on ilmeisesti antaa vahva viesti siitä, kuka käskee ja ketä.

Tähtien Sota -hankkeen tarkoituksena on luoda USA:lle mahdollisuus ensi-iskuun ilman vastaiskumahdollisuutta USAa tai sen liittolaisia (eli “intressejä” eli imperiumin orjia) vastaan. Maailmasta tehdään näin turvallisempi paikka, kun olemme kaikki vankeja ja kyttäämme toisiamme. Ja jos se ei olisi USA, niin se olisi joku pahempi - harmi vain että se “pahempi” voi olla miksi USA on tulossa, jos ei suunta muutu.

Tämä kriittisyys ei ole kielteisyyttä, vaan kaiken hyväksyminen ilman kritiikkiä on kielteistä välinpitämättömyyttä, pelokasta itsesensuuria ja pessimististä voimattomuuttamista (voimauttamisen vastakohta!)

Rice matkaa Tshekkiin sopimaan ohjuspuolustusjärjestelmästä

Ulkoministeri Condoleezza Rice matkustaa maanantaina Prahaan allekirjoittamaan sopimuksen USA:n ohjuspuolustusjärjestelmän rakentamisesta Tshekin maaperälle, Yhdysvaltain ulkoministeriöstä kerrotaan.

Ricen kerrotaan nelipäiväisen vierailunsa aikana vierailevan myös Bulgarian Sofiassa sekä Georgian Tbilisissä.

Yhdysvallat haluaa rakentaa ohjuspuolustusjärjestelmänsä Tshekin ja Puolan maaperälle puolustaakseen itseänsä ja liittolaisiansa kutsumiltansa “konnavaltioilta”, joihin se laskee Iranin lukeutuvan.

Tshekki on hyväksynyt järjestelmänsä maaperälleen. Puola on toistaiseksi torjunut Yhdysvaltain Puolen maaperälle kaavaileman ohjuspuolustusjärjestelmän.

Yhdysvaltalaislähteiden mukaan Rice olisi valmis tekemään vierailun nyt myös Varsovaan, mikäli ohjuspuolustusasiassa päästäisiin yhteisymmärrykseen hänen Euroopan vierailunsa aikana.

Puolan pääministeri Donald Tusk totesi lauantaina maan olevan valmis jatkamaan neuvotteluja Yhdysvaltain puolustuskilven osan sijoittamisesta Puolaan.

Venäjä vastustaa Yhdysvaltain Itä-Euroopan-ohjuskilpihanketta. Myös yleinen mielipide on hanketta vastaan niin Puolassa kuin Tshekissä.

The hunger strike of immigrants without papers at the Beguinage church in Brussels has finished with a small victory. Below the letter from Gilles Smedts of Belgian Humanist Party:

Good evening,

During the general meeting of this evening, the strikers accepted the proposal of the ministry for migration and put an end to the strike, after 57 days.

They obtained a residence permit for 9 months (white form, renewable) with a type C work permit.

It is a great victory, compared to result of the previous hunger strikes.

The joy was beautiful to see in the church of Béguinage, a very beautiful moment full of human warmness.
But let us not be misleaded, if the victory is beautiful, it remains small.

It relates to 147 people without papers for 9 months. The estimation is that there are 150.000 “without-papers” only in Belgium.

And the shameful European directive was indeed voted by the majority of the Belgian deputies at the European Parliament.

The remaining 147 strikers managed to maintain their unity on the essential aspects and the democracy in the decisions. It is certainly one of the keys of the small victory of today.

The personal commitment of two trade unionists of the CSC in the strike was certainly an important component, as well as the international campaign of faxes and emails of protest diffused through the humanist network. Sendings of more than 20 countries arrived to Belgium and to the Belgian embassies.

At the human level, being in agreement or not with the hunger strike, one can only humbly take off his hat to these men and women who fought with their harts for what they find just.

In any case, the close support of the strikers was an opportunity for a lesson of courage, determination and democracy.

The strikers will now wait for the promises to be put in concrete form before dispersing. They will remain at the church for a while.

The progressive refeeding began this evening with the distribution of a vegetable soup.
